Choosing the wrong coil nailer is one of the most common and costly mistakes in furniture and sofa manufacturing. The wrong nail size, the wrong tool model, or poor air pressure settings can lead to split wood frames, weak joints, and slow production. This guide helps you pick the right coil nailer for your workshop.
What Is a Coil Nailer?
A coil nailer is a pneumatic tool that drives coil nails — nails arranged in a circular coil magazine — into wood. Because the nails are coiled, the magazine holds 200–300 nails at a time, meaning less downtime for reloading compared to strip nailers. This makes coil nailers the preferred choice for high-volume sofa frame assembly.
CN55 vs CN70: Which One Do You Need?
The two most popular coil nailers in the Indian sofa industry are the CN55 and the CN70. Here is how to choose between them:
| Feature | CN55 | CN70 |
|---|---|---|
| Nail length range | 25mm – 55mm | 45mm – 70mm |
| Best for | Standard sofa frame joints, base boards | Heavy-duty frames, thick hardwood |
| Wood thickness | Up to 38mm single board | Up to 50mm single board |
| Air pressure | 70–100 PSI | 80–110 PSI |
| Weight | Lighter, less fatigue | Slightly heavier |
| Price | More affordable | Higher |
For most sofa workshops, the CN55 is sufficient and more cost-effective. Choose the CN70 only if you regularly work with hardwood frames thicker than 40mm or need to drive nails longer than 55mm.
Which Coil Nails to Use?
Always match your nails to your wood thickness. A general rule: the nail should be 2.5 to 3 times the thickness of the top board being nailed.
- Joining 15mm + 15mm boards: use 45mm nails
- Joining 18mm + 18mm boards: use 50mm nails
- Attaching base board to frame: use 45mm–55mm nails
- Heavy sofa leg attachment: use 60mm–70mm nails (CN70)
Air Pressure Settings
Wrong air pressure is the main cause of nail gun problems in workshops:
- Too low pressure: nails do not fully sink — proud heads catch on fabric
- Too high pressure: nails go too deep — wood splits or the nail pokes through
- Correct setting: the nail head should sit flush or 0.5mm below the wood surface
Start at 80 PSI and adjust up or down in 5 PSI increments on scrap wood until you get a flush drive.
Maintenance Tips to Extend Tool Life
- Add 2–3 drops of pneumatic tool oil into the air inlet every morning before use
- Never run the tool on a dry air line — moisture and lack of lubrication destroy the driver blade
- Clear jams immediately by depressing the safety nose — do not force the trigger
- Store in a dry place — rust on coil nails causes frequent jams
- Use a water separator/filter on your air line to remove moisture
